These two words carry tremendous power when placed together, drawing on 2,000 years of complex and, at times, troubled history. Associations between Jews and money underlie some of the most deeply rooted antisemitic ideas in circulation, still very much alive today. This publication was created to complement the exhibition Jews, Money, Myth in collaboration with the Pears Institute for the study of Antisemitism, Birkbeck, University of London.
Through essays and contributions from the leading scholars and artists, this publication develops some of the exhibition's key themes. It examines the role of money in Jewish life and the place of Jews - real and imagined - in commerce, capitalism and finance up to the present day.
